‘The Avengers’ movie broke all the records at the box office this spring, and it also provided a stage for Acura to feature new luxury cars and SUVs. It is the car depicted in the closing scene with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, a dark red Acura convertible based on the Acura NSX concept car, that is creating a big stir in the luxury auto world.
This Acura convertible concept was created specifically for the movie but draws upon the design of the Acura NSX hard-top concept that was unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The NSX coupe is slated for production in 2015, coincidentally at the same time ‘The Avengers’ sequel is expected to hit theatres. The luxury supercar is expected to feature a mid-mounted V-6 VTEC engine with direct-injection and dual-clutch transmission routing power for the rear wheels while electric motors will power the front wheels. These performance enhancements are not part of the movie prop, however.
The Acura NSX entered the luxury car world in 1990 as the most expensive Japanese-brand car on the US market. The NSX was the first supercar from Japan, and its name stands for “New Sportscar eXperimental.” The car enjoyed high publicity and popularity as well as championship wins in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTP Lights series until Acura stopped production of the model in 2005. The 2015 reintroduction of the NSX will prove to be an exciting time for luxury supercar enthusiasts who have eagerly anticipated its return.
